It was also our second full contact camp of the year! The focus of the camp was to prepare the campers for the upcoming season, as they will be on the field with their respective teams in less than a month! The camp included a series of full contact drills, individual position instruction, boot camp (conditioning) and team games. The difference at this camp was that the coaches really increased the intensity of the camp to simulate game speed. I felt that all athletes adapted well to the pace of the camp. The full contact drills were full of excitement with big hits and plenty of form tackling. The Boot Camp was another tough one! Coach Woods did an amazing job leading this session and keeping the campers motivated during the most challenging part of the camp.

I was pleased to see the leadership of the campers that had been to an IronWill Football Camp, as they were always at the front of each line in drills and were continuously encouraging other campers. Thank you for your positive leadership.

Without the community support of Tammy Shevalier and her son Jesse Cooling, IronWill Football Camps wouldn’t happen in Rocky Mountain House. Thank you for your support. I would also like to thank the Rocky Mountain House Credit Union for their sponsorship of water bottles to each IronWill camper.

This was a great camp to kick off the 2010 fall football season. I look forward to seeing all the IronWill Football athletes on the gridiron this season. Apply all the skills that you have learned from the IronWill Football Camps on the field! You will definitely see all of your hard work pay off!

July 24-25, 2010 IronWill Football had it’s first outdoor full contact camp in Red Deer, Alberta and it was a huge success! You could feel the excitement and anticipation from the campers as they were eager to get started. The football season is right around the corner and this camp was an excellent way of shaking the rust off. At this camp we had our youngest group of kids. Our youngest being only 8, with the oldest camper being 14 years old.

The focus of this camp was to incorporate contact drills to the IronWill Football summer program. We worked on teaching correct tackling, blocking and position specific techniques with contact. We had the athletes go through a series of tackling circuits and tackling drills to improve this aspect of the game. Our goals within the IronWill staff going into the July camp was to make sure each athlete was able to leave the camp confident and tackling correctly. We would like everyone to have a better understanding of there specific position on the field. These goals were definitely achieved our as the overall tackling and all contact drills improved from day 1 to day 2!

I was pleased to see all players complete in the IronWill Boot Camp sessions. Not only was the boot camp vigour’s; the summer heat played a major factor. This session was definitly one of the most challenging. However the campers showed great character and stepped up to the challenge.

Overall I was pleased with our first outdoor full contact camp, It was a treat to work with a younger age group. The IronWill staff really did a great job concentrating on the fundamental aspect of the game. As these athletes mature in their football careers, they will carry over the fundamental techniques that they have learned at the IronWill Football Camp, which will pay off in the future!

I look forward to seeing everyone in Rocky Mountain House August 7-8, 2010 or in the near future!

Coach Burris

“Challenging Yourself is the Only Way to get Better…” was the slogan that adorned the back of the t-shirts worn by camp participants. Tim Burris is the founder of IronWill Football and generally holds his camps in Red Deer. With the assistance of West Central Rebels player Jesse Cooling and his mom Tammy, Coach Burris agreed to hold a pilot camp in Rocky June 19th-20th. Coach Burris is currently the defensive coordinator for the Red Deer Bucaneers. He was also a freshman starter on the 2002 Vanier Cup Championship Team. Joining him as coaches were Erik Glabic, CIS Athlete of the Year and current Quarterback of the University of Calgary Dinos; Atnas Maeko former player for the BC Lions and Hamilton Tiger Cats; and, Jon Braddock who played at St. Mary’s University in Halifax. The camp focused on the fundamental skills of football through sessions which included position specific skills development, drills, boot camps, and game play. Coaches took the time to get to know each of the players by name and built self esteem through praise and encouragement. Game play brought home the message of strong team work and the importance of communication between players.

“I am very impressed with the willingness of these athletes to learn and improve their skills. There is so much talent here,” commented Coach Burris, “some of the boys didn’t realize how talented they are.”

Coach Burris went on to say he noticed an improvement in the players over the two days and players showed “lots of concentration on the details of what they are being taught.”

Parents also expressed enthusiasm about the camp. “It’s awesome because they are learning so much about skill development and footwork,” said Kim Philips whose son Cody plays on the Rocky Bantam team. “I like the age group,” commented Brent Allen, whose 10 and 15 year old boys were camp participants. “It’s nice to have the one on one instruction from the coaches,” added Penny Allen. The camp was open to ages 8 to 18. Jennifer and Bill McLean came with their son Brent from Sylvan Lake. “Brent is learning all the basics and techniques that he needs to know,” said Jennifer, “I like how they encourage teamwork.” Christian Norrad who plays in Caroline said the camp “taught me a lot.” He added how sore he was after the boot camp. (A feeling shared by other players)

“Hard work but an awesome camp; learned a lot,” commented West Central Rebels player Chris Lubinkhof.

His fellow teammate Zac Siltala agreed adding “good skills, good people – memorable.” The camp proved successful in its’ intent as relayed by Rebels player Warren Allen, “Really hopeful; going to better our season.”

The next camp is full contact in Red Deer July 24th-25th. Players will be required to be in full gear. IronWill Football is planning a full contact camp in Rocky August 7th-8th. For further information visit their website at www.ironwillfootball.ca. For information about the Rocky camp, contact Tammy Shevalier at 403-844-4868.

The Quarterback and Skills camp showed us what the future holds for football in Alberta. Coaches at the camp witnessed highly talented athletes at the pee wee, bantam and senior high school levels. The coaches seen major improvement in all athletes at the camp. All coaches emphasized on paying attention to detail as well as executing each drill correctly and to the best of their ability.

We had 11 quarterbacks and they had the opportunity to learn and work with outstanding quarterbacks Erik Glavic from University of Calgary and Julian Marchand from the University of Alberta. I was very pleased to see so many quarterbacks looking to improve their game! The quarterbacks acquired new skills that they can bring back to there respective team once the season has started. All coaches did an outstanding job working on quarterback specific footwork and teaching how to improve throwing accuracy and learned how to throw all the routes on the passing tree.

The receivers and running backs had the opportunity to work specifically by Coach Woods. These campers gained a great deal of knowledge for their position, made major improvements to their route running, catching as well as understanding their roles and responsibilities on the field. Coach Woods had the Receivers and Running Backs go through concentration catching drills which was new to the athletes. By the second day, everyone was more comfortable with drills and were able to start focusing on getting better.

The Mother’s Day 5 km run was implemented by Coach Woods. Every year he completes a 5 km run in appreciation for his mother. We thought that this would be a great idea. All campers were extremely motivated and determined to complete the run. This run was used not only as a training tool but to honor and appreciate the hard work and dedication each mother puts into sending their kids to our football camps.

The Linebackers and Defensive Backs worked on there back pedal and coverage skills. Coach Braddock; in each individual position skills session, had the athletes go through a series of hip drills to improve their overall range of motion.

The atmosphere at the Skills camp was very positive. Athletes, parents and coaches were all extremely happy with the end results. The coaches are very impressed with the effort as well as the willingness to learn about how to become a better football player. As spring camps for schools across Alberta commence, apply the skills and tools that IronWill Football has provided you with to become a better player and help your team become one.

Once again, thank you to the coaches in attendance. You all did a great job coaching each skill position Everyone went home with a lot of new tips and how to improve their overall game. Players; now is the time to implement everything you have learned!

I am extremely pleased with the the skills camp! It is so exciting to see so much young talent we have in Alberta! I look forward to seeing everyone in July.

All of the athletes were very receptive to the constructive criticism that the coaches gave them. This will make them become a better player.

The term ‘No Fear’ enters my mind as each athlete was challenged with drills that they have never done before. They took the challenge and excelled! Each camper gave maximum effort and executed each drill to the best of their ability.

This camp was special because there were leaders in the group that kept a positive spirit and kept encouraging the group when the drills and boot camp became rigorous . A great team not only has great athletes but they have great leaders who can teach by example. The coaches really saw the leadership qualities come out at this camp.

We had a presentation about Anti- Bullying at school and on teams. This aspect of the camp was different as some athletes facial express said “what does anti- bullying have to do with football”? As the presentation unfolded campers realized that Bullying not only happens at school but on the sports teams. Everyone deserves respect both on and off the field! I know this presentation really hit home as campers and parents thanked the IronWill Football staff for touching on this subject.

All coaches did an amazing job through the whole camp; keep up the great work.

I can’t wait to see the athletes from this camp on the field. I hope they will be using the tools and techniques they have learned at this past camp on their respective teams. If all the athletes are this good now, think of the growth and potential they will have when they play Senior High School football.

Once again great job by all athletes and staff.

See everyone in May 8th-9th for the skills camp.
